Exfoliation has so many benefits that if you aren’t doing it, you’ll want to start! Just like reptiles shed their old, dead skin we need to do so too. Exfoliation is a process that helps shed or remove dead, dry skin so your skin can glow and look more youthful. The process can improve circulation and stimulate collagen. When you get rid of dead skin cells, serums and moisturizers can penetrate more easily and work better.
Another benefit is that your pores are unclogged, which can help reduce acne break outs. You may notice a more even skin tone as well. Hmm, can it reduce fine lines and wrinkles? Well, yes, by stimulating collagen, renewing your cells, and making it easier for your lotions and potions to penetrate it certainly can reduce fine lines and wrinkles!
Sounds good, so now you are wondering how to exfoliate? There are a lot of ways to exfoliate. You can utilize a facial wash or scrub. These are a bit grainy or feel like they have sand particles in them. A facial cleansing brush or facial loofah provides a bit more strength. Exfoliation does not have to be done every day, shoot for three times a week.
Another choice can be Retin A products. These come in various strengths. Start low and go slow. You need to ease into using Retin A, otherwise you might actually look like a snake with your skin peeling. I made the mistake once of over-doing Retin A and for days people told me I had crumbs on my face.
Although, it wasn’t crumbs, it was the dead skin cells peeling off my face! Not a good look and it was quite embarrassing. Remember to start low and go slow!
The strongest exfoliating power comes from chemical peels and can be done at home, by a dermatologist or aesthetician. Chemical peels can be harsh and can damage your skin if not done skillfully, so a professional is recommended if you go this route. Keep in mind you may need a few days to recover from a chemical peel. Your face may be quite red or blistery afterwards so plan accordingly!
And don’t just exfoliate your face. Your neck and decolletage needs it too. Have you ever seen that woman with breathtaking gorgeous skin that forgot about her neck and decolletage? It is almost a living “before and after” photo and we only want to be showing the world the “after” results! Even your body can benefit from exfoliation with a body brush.
Yes, it can feel funny “brushing” your body before taking a bath or shower, but the after-effects will be silky, soft skin.
